The Lifestyle Balance Program is a proven program that has been effective in reducing the risk for type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases, assisting in weight loss and maintenance of a healthy body weight, and decreasing the risk for heart disease and stroke. The program is taught by CDC National Diabetes Prevention Program trained instructors including a certified exercise physiologist, registered dietitian, and a health educator. Each session includes an education component and participation in a physical activity. All participants receive their own personal lifestyle change coach who will assist them with goal setting, progress, and overcoming barriers. Program participants also receive incentives such as step counters, resistance bands, cook books, and more.
Since July 2009, the health department has been providing this program and program participants have lost a combined total of over 2,400 pounds. Program participation has also resulted in an improvement in blood pressure, body fat and cholesterol levels. When asked about the effectiveness of the program, recent participants have stated, “I am so thankful for this program. I truly believe it helped to save my life;” and “This program has improved my health significantly, I feel.”
