Approximately 300 people participated in the event on September 28 to raise awareness about suicide prevention and mental illness.
The outreach and fundraising effort supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the leading national nonprofit exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy. The organization reaches out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide.
The Ocean City Out of the Darkness Community Walk was sponsored by the Jesse Klump Memorial Fund, Worcester County Health Department and Core Service Agency, Atlantic General Hospital, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Life Crisis Center, Worcester County Youth Suicide Awareness and Prevention Program and other local partners.
Donations can still be accepted via http://www.outofthedarkness.org or text AFSP (space) OCEAN to 85944 (until December 31, 2013).
Walkers joined thousands of people nationwide to raise funds to support research aimed at improving our understanding of suicide and how to prevent it.
