Worcester County Health Department confirms first case of COVID-19 in Worcester County

The Worcester County Health Department (WCHD) confirmed the first positive test for a case of COVID-19 in Worcester County on March 19, 2020. The patient is a male in his 30s who lives in Worcester County and is recovering at home.

Program Updates

In response to COVID-19, effective today, all Worcester County Health Department buildings are closed to the public. We are still working behind the scenes to protect our community. In accordance with Governor Hogan’s Executive Order regarding COVID-19 and social distancing, the Worcester County Health Department will be postponing the following programs:

  • Diabetes Prevention Program- all groups are postponed
  • Diabetes Support Group-  March monthly support group postponed
  • Worcester Wellness Weigh Cooking Demonstration scheduled for March 26, 2020 at 5:30 pm the Pocomoke Health Center
  • TIPS Training scheduled for March 23, 2020 at 10 am at the Snow Hill Health Center

In addition, the Health Department will be canceling the following events:

The COVID-19 situation globally, nationally, and locally is constantly changing and evolving every day. The Worcester County Health Department will provide consistent updates as new information becomes available to keep residents safe and informed. Here are some frequently asked questions and answers we’ve seen in our community.

What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is a disease caused by a respiratory virus. This is a virus that hasn’t caused illness in humans before. COVID-19 is spread just like colds or flu through coughing and sneezing, which creates respiratory droplets, close personal contact, such as touching or shaking hands, or touching an object or surface with the virus on it. Symptoms of COVID-19 include: fever, coughing, shortness of breath, and in more severe cases, pneumonia (infection in the lungs).

Worcester Health opens call center for Coronavirus questions

 

 

(Snow Hill, MD)- The Worcester County Health Department opened a call center Thursday, March 12, 2020, for questions regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19). Callers can reach the center during health department business hours (8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday) by dialing 410-632-1100 option #8. General information on COVID-19 is available 24/7 through Worcester Health’s Public Information Line (410-632-4321) and WorcesterHealth.org.
